Mettler Toledo, AG specialists Arthur Reichmuth and Dr. Klaus Fritsch published an article "Good Weighing Practices for the Pharmaceutical Industry – Risk-Based Qualification and Life Cycle Management of Weighing Systems" in PHARMACEUTICAL ENGINEERING magazine 2009 November/December of ISPE.

The article gives an overview presentation of a universal method to select and test weighing instruments based on an integrated qualification approach.
Considering primarily the user's weighing requirements and risks, it describes a state-of-the-art strategy to ensure reliable weighing processes embedded in any current quality management system.

Authors develop a topic of value-add from the regular user tests on: calibration, sensitivity, repeatability, and eccentricity. Moreover, there is a short introduction, to a new Balance Risk Check tool, that was recently launched by Mettler Toledo in order to support user with tests in an easy and playful way.

It is emphasized, that combined understanding of the weighing process requirements together with an understanding of the basic principles of balance properties as weighing uncertainty and minimum weight enables the user to realize an integrated qualification strategy. What brings integrated qualification strategy to a basis for achieving qualified weighing processes. Risk- and life cycle management fills the gap between regulatory compliance, process quality, and cost consciousness.

analytica China 2008 (21st – 23rd September 2008)

The fourth analytica China 2008, which was held at Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), closed its gates on September 25, 2008 having set new records in the number of visitors and exhibitors. There were 342 exhibitors from 19 countries, which are nearly one-fourth more companies than at analytica China 2006. The analytica China Conference and the technical conferences and symposia that accompany the exhibition featured prominent speakers from around the world.

This year's analytica China verified its significance as a leading platform for analysis, laboratory technology, diagnostics and biotechnology in China and Asia. analytica China continued its success story in one of the industry's most important growth markets: the 342 exhibitors at this year's fair occupied more than 17,000 square meters of exhibition space, a nearly 50-percent increase over 2006. There were a total of 13,146 visitors in three days, among which 9091 registered for analytica China and the rest 4055 for IFAT China which is the collocation trade fair for environmental protection. The visitor amount is the largest number since the fair was founded in 2002. Among Chinese and Asian companies, demand for the products and solutions of European and North American companies with exhibits at this year's fair also continues to increase.

The food industry’s legal requirements are now enforced more strictly than ever. Food safety, in particular, comes with a very high public awareness of consumer protection rights. However, requirements, such as GxP or ISO, do not offer detailed solutions for daily measuring processes.
To bridge this gap, METTLER TOLEDO has developed a globally applicable guideline called ‘Good Weighing PracticeTM’ (GWP®). It is a risk-based program which puts the demands of all current quality systems for weighing processes into practice.

We asked Dr. Klaus Fritsch, Manager Compliance at METTLER TOLEDO, to give us more insights on this program.

Klaus, can you please explain to our readers how Good Weighing Practice™ works?

With GWP®, we offer the customer an easy implementation of specific weighing process requirements. Risks are minimized, quality is ensured and money is saved. Furthermore, GWP® helps companies to pass audits simply and safely. It is based on a defined set of activities that begins with an evaluation of individual risks, recommend appropriate actions and lead to safe routine operation.

You state that the user can minimize risk by applying GWP® and at the same time reduce efforts and costs. Can you be more specific?

GWP® analyses the risks of the weighing process and recommends routine tests where the risk is high. For low-risk processes smaller test efforts are required. Therefore only those tests which are necessary to satisfy our customers’ high quality requirements are recommended. The selection of the appropriate measuring instruments in order to satisfy the requirements of the respective application also play an important role. Intelligent safety functions integrated in the balance, e.g. FACT, further reduce user tests. Depending on the amount of tests appropriate for a given risk, this may help to save time and costs substantially.

What are the production process risks which can be eliminated from weighing systems?

Very frequently, the smallest components of a mixture have the highest influence on the quality of a product. For example, a recipe for an ice cream could require 30 kg whey (+/- 300 g) but only 150 g flavor (+/- 1.5 g). The question of the ’right’ balance begins here. The instrument must achieve the necessary accuracy for even the smallest component.

Many of our balances are equipped with a warning function (MinWeigh), which indicates to the user on the display if the minimum weight is not reached. With
GWP®, METTLER TOLEDO offers our customers more than accurate measurement technology. The achieved know-how and the right instrument handling guarantee constant high level quality.

Good Weighing Practice™ (GWP®) - Implementation in Pharmaceutical Routine

Following the introduction of GWP® in a pharmaceutical company in Eastern Switzerland, customer consultants from METTLER TOLEDO, Daniel W. Fuchs and Urs Alig, interviewed Dr. Pierre-Alain Muller from the Post Approval Support Department to discover their impressions after implementing the program.

Dr. Muller, can you please tell us why you have decided to integrate GWP® into your department?

Our department provides scientific and technical support for all pharmaceutical products
that we have introduced in the market. We were in the process of revising all of our existing standard operating procedures (SOPs) and implement a simplified and widely accepted approach for routine testing of our laboratory balances. In addition, we needed to purchase a new semi-micro balance. We contacted METTLER TOLEDO and got to learnt about the GWP® program. As it is based on a risk analysis approach, we immediately knew where and what our testing should be focused on.

How important are reliable weighing results for you?

We continuously strive to improve our products and to do so we have modern and sophisticated
analytical methods in place. We therefore have to rely on our balances and cannot tolerate any deviations as weighing results are the starting point of many laboratory analyses. Wrong results cost time and money.

Do the GWP® guidelines help to prevent errors?

Yes. As mentioned, GWP® is a risk-based program which gives clear guidance as to where we need to place more emphasis on control when the risk is high or where we can save time and effort where the risk factor is low. It proposes all necessary test criteria such as type of test, testing interval, test tolerances and supplies SOPs for the individual tests. Not only the regular routine tests with weights are taken into consideration but also the external service and recommendations on balance features that further secure the accuracy of the weighing results are supplied.

What do you mean by ‘balance features’?

GWP® suggests balance features that make it very simple for the user to guarantee the correctness of the weighing results. For example, when we purchased our balances, we made sure that they were equipped with internal adjustment weights and FACT (Fully Automatic Calibration Technology). This eliminates measurement deviations caused by temperature changes. Additional features, such as LevelControl (electronic level monitoring),
help to further reduce error sources. All these features are highly appreciated by the users.

What have been the most important improvements that you have achieved with GWP®?

The main benefit for us is that it minimizes risks without increasing our workload. It also improves traceability of the measurement uncertainty of our balances in terms of documentation. We feel much more secure and can also prove it.

Was it difficult and expensive to change over to GWP®?

No. METTLER TOLEDO helped us in all possible situations. What we used to do was not really wrong, but small and very important changes clearly helped us to improve our processes. With minimal investment we are sure that we have chosen the right balances for our needs and are confident that each measurement is accurate. It really has paid off!

Tips for Proper Weighing with Laboratory Balances

Weighing is one of the most common tasks in the laboratory. Advanced micro, semi-micro, analytical and precision balances have now been perfected to such a degree that, in general, no special weighing rooms are needed.

Technological advances in electronics have considerably simplified the operation of balances, drastically cut weighing times, and made the balances so adaptable that they can now be integrated directly into a production process.

The risk inherent in this progress, however, is that not enough care will be taken to prevent disturbing influences from the surrounding area. These usually involve physical effects which are measurable for micro, semi-micro and analytical balances, and which analytical balances cannot suppress because they result in measurable weight changes (e.g. through slow evaporation, moisture uptake), or forces which act on the weighing pan and weighing sample (e.g. magnetism, electrostatics) and which are interpreted by the balance as weight changes.

The purpose of these instructions is to explain the most important points to be noted when working with micro, semi-micro and analytical balances if high-quality results are required.
